Hospice Background

How we treat people in our community reflects who we are as a society. When it comes to boating, sailors are quick to assist when something goes wrong because people know it could happen to them. Sailors help each other on the water and on the shore; this is the philosophy behind the Toronto Area Hospice Regatta (www.tahr.ca) hosted by the National Yacht club on lake Ontario. Net proceeds from the event will help support Perram House.

UNITING SAILORS

This two day event will involve One Design Fleets with as many as 50 racing boats participating. Affiliated with the National Hospice Regatta Alliance in the United States, the Toronto regatta is open to boats in the following classes: Beneteau 36.7, J22, C&C 115, Star, Melges 20, and Melges 24 just to name a few. If you want to race or just watch, this regatta promises to have something for everyone. Skip or crew a boat or watch from a spectator boat. Online boat registration is open at www.tahr.ca

SAILING TO FUND HOSPICE CARE

Located on the border between Regent Park and St. Jamestown in downtown Toronto, Perram House (www.perramhouse.ca) offers palliative care in a home setting to individuals who have a limited life expectancy. In the spirit of compassionate care, clients are supported by a dedicated nursing staff, five physicians, personal support with the assistance of trained volunteers, placing the client in control of his or her life and care.

All donations will go a long way to making a difference in the life of a patient at Perram House. Corporations are jumping on board in a big way. More corporate sponsors are welcome and committee organizers are looking for items for their silent auction.

BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE

As Ontario's population ages, the need for quality end-of-life care escalates. Each year hundreds of thousands of Canadians die, and as the number of people with life-threatening illness continues to escalate, the number of people who are cared for by a loved one in the patient's home or in the home of a family members increases. Hospice care provides much needed relief and emotional support to patients and their loved ones.
